Name: At first, Emma planned on having her first name be Maria to honor her late-mother. It isn't known why Emma decided to use Maria as her daughter's middle name instead. While going through some baby name books with her cousin Maddie she came across the name "Jessica." She felt that it was almost right but not perfect, so Maddie suggested she use Jessie as a nickname. Emma loved this idea and named her daughter Jessica Maria Novoa, Jessie for short.
Childhood: Jessie had a happy care-free childhood. She grew up in a wealthy family but wasn't spoiled and didn't let her
wealth or her mother's fame go to her head. There was nothing more she liked doing than hanging out with her friends. As a small child, she enjoyed going on joyrides on her mother's enchanted magic book Hex. "Sometimes I miss being a kid. Having no responsibility or care in the world." Jessie - Shawn.
Growing up it was suggested that Jessie didn't often see her mother who was normally busy with her chosen one obligations. One woman she did see almost daily was Andi. Jax and Andi were close so it is possible Andi would often visit Jax while Jessie was growing up. Andi was also best friends with Jessie's mother. It was also suggested Jessie may have been closer to Andi than she was to her own mother.
At the age of five, Jessie's second-cousin Emily accidentally blew up Jessie's favorite comic book. Angry, Jessie threatened to send an Evil Kanay after Emily though she didn't actually carry that threat out. At age seven, Jessie and Shawn had been playing a dance game, during which she and Shawn shared their first kisses as they bumped lips while falling down.
Jessie came into the magic only at the age of ten despite it being prophesied she was to be the next chosen one. This means that like her mother, Jessie has the special magic genes. She was very excited to start her magic training. (More on this below.)
As a teenager, Jessie struggled to find a balance between her magic life and her mortal life. At times she'd have very little
interest in being around her friends and doing normal teenage activities. Other times, she'd have little interest in her magic. Jessie wasn't a troubled teen and didn't experiment with much. She lost her virginity to Ben around the age of fourteen when they had gotten caught up in a moment. She didn't have another sexual experience until her late teens when she became curious about being sexually active, most likely caused by all of her friends being in sexual relationships. To experiment with this curiosity, and because she was tired of being treated like a kid by her parents, Jessie started having casual sex with a classmate she barely knew. She was eventually caught. At eighteen, Jessie hooked up with a random guy at a bar which resulted in her getting pregnant.
Family and friendships: Jessie is the daughter of Jax and Emma Novoa. Jessie was closer to her father than she was to her mother, however, she admired her mother, had a desperate need to please her and make her proud.

One of Jessie's best friends is her second-cousin Emily. "It means we share the same great-grandparents. It also means our mothers are first-cousins. Jessie's grandfather is my grandmother's brother." Emily - Sienna. The two don't actually have all that much in common seeing as Jessie's a tom-boy who enjoys comic books and Emily's a girly-girl. They do have some of the same personality traits though. Still, they have things they bond over. This also goes for Jessie's relationship with her friend Gracie, who she appears to be the least close to.
Jessie appears to be closest with her male friends: Ethan, Shawn, and Ben as she shares many of her interests with them. One being her love of the comic book "Alien blaster" which she always reads the newest issues of with Ethan. Jessie also tends to be more into activities considered to be for "boys." She also doesn't act that much like a stereotypical girl. Jessie has known Shawn and Ethan as well as Emily and Gracie her entire life, but she only met Ben when they were ten. They were teammates at the Academy and slowly became friends.
Other family relationships. Jessie is related to many of the characters. She's distantly related to all of Emily's descendants. She also happens to the second-cousin of Sara Lauren which makes her Sophie's first-cousin once removed. She is further related to Sara's descendants.
Love life and motherhood: Jessie technically had her first kiss with Shawn at the age of seven. However, neither of them count that kiss because it had been accidental and because of how young they had been. So, Jessie's first kiss happened with Ben at the age of ten. Jessie only had a few romances. In her early teenage years, Jessie and Ben had sex one time after getting caught up in a moment. They both agreed it had meant nothing and it wouldn't happen again. As an older teen, Jessie grew curious about being sexually active and had a few sessions of casual sex with a classmate before getting caught by her father sneaking him out of her room. Then to celebrate her eighteenth birthday and becoming the chosen-one, Jessie went out for drinks with her friends. She was left behind as it became late and made the poor choice of continuing to drink instead of heading home. She ended up having a one-night-stand with a random guy which resulted in her getting pregnant. Jessie didn't know who the guy was and couldn't remember what he looked like. So, she chose not to find him and to raise the baby on her own.
Personality: Headstrong, sometimes impulsive, determined. Three words that perfectly described Jessie. She was an excitable child who loved hanging out with her friends more than anything else. She was almost never alone and she always ready to lend a hand to family members or friends in need of help. Jessie could be quite sassy at times as well.
Jessie's magic training
Jessie started her first-year of her magic training and education at W.I.T.S Academy in September of 2016. Her academy guardian was Andrea Cruz and her teammate was Ben Sanders
Jessie's stolen magic
In the second chapter of the second book, Jessie realized her magic was gone. Panicking, she woke Andi and told her. Andi was on high alert and wanted to call Emma and tell Aggie but Jessie pointed out her mother would just cause a scene and wake everyone, and Aggie would ask how Jessie had realized it at four in the morning. If she told the truth she would get in trouble. Aggie could also think she was sneaking around after hours trying to help rescue Phillip because she's best friends with Andi's son and Andi. Andi agreed they would speak to Aggie first thing in the morning. Jessie let Andi handle talking to Aggie and joins her friends for breakfast but didn't eat. Jessie wanted to drop out of the Academy but Andi stopped her by asking for a week to get her magic back. Jessie then wrote a quite dramatic letter to her paternal grandparents about losing her magic.
When she got her magic back from Emily and learned who had stolen it, Jessie decided it was revenge time and whispered her plan to Emily. She didn't take part in the revenge since she wanted to just sit back and enjoy the show, but when the revenge went south, she took fall with Emily and Ethan instead of letting her friends take all the blame. Jessie tried to rescue Ruby by opening a portal but instead opened up a black hole and almost got sucked in. She was saved by Andi and Ben and Emily.
Halloween of 2016
In the sixth chapter, under the influence of Halloween, Jessie pranked Emily. Normally, Emily would have found it funny and prank her back but Emily- under the influence of Halloween- was angry. She challenged Jessie to a magic duel and Jessie agreed. As the duel started, Ethan tried to convince them to stop, and then he jumped in to save Jessie from Emily's spell. Ethan was hit by the spell and had to be brought to the hospital. Emily and Jessie later apologized to each other.
The mission
Ethan asked Jessie- int the fourth chapter of the second book- to help him look for information that could help him in the library find the answers to finding his father and bringing home. Jessie was beyond excited to help out with the mission because she was rarely asked to do so. It was later mentioned by Ethan to Andi that they hadn't had any luck.
In the sixth chapter, Ethan planned a mission session with his friends. He told Ben they would be checking classrooms to see if the teachers had information. He assigned Jessie and Emily to the library to check out the books in the last two rows. He assigned Shawn and Emily to the computer lab to attempt breaking into council records or searching people tied to Phillip. This plan didn't happen because Emily and Ethan ended up with Ruby while the others rescued Andi and Duggie from the dark river.
The second mission
Jessie talked to her mother about how she believed the council would strike again. Emma agreed and told her she didn't think Luke's memory of being Phillip was permanent. Jessie agreed with her mother on this. Emma asked her if she was going to keep an eye on Aggie to make sure he didn't figure out what was going on. Jessie replied that she was and would.
Jessie's disappearance
In the second chapter, Jessie was furious her father wasn't allowed to remain in the Academy alongside her and her mother. In the middle of the night, with Emily's help, Jessie returned home through a portal to collect her father. She was later reported missing.
In the fourth chapter, Jessie returned to the Academy where she was reunited with her mother, Andi, and her friends. She revealed she hadn't actually been missing and explained that after her grandfather had vanished she and her father had gone to Australia with her grandmother for safekeeping. She didn't explain why she hadn't let anyone know where she was and that she was okay.
